Best Property Services MD Garry Best, and Operations Director Edwina Flynn were delighted to be among some of the Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade members this morning to hear Mr Conor Murphy speak at his first visit to Newry as Finance Minister.

Newry Chamber of Commerce CEO Colm Shannon, presented on the issues that the Newry business community face, and the key priorities for the greater Newry area including the following;

• Delivering the Belfast Region City Deal And City Regeneration

• Southern Relief Road

• Fairer Rates System

• Investment in digital infrastructure and innovation to deliver better jobs

• Maximising our location to attract investment

• Support for our businesses

• Investment in public services

• Connected transport infrastructure that supports a growing business community

• Delivery of commitments on no hard border and support for business on trading

Local businesses were given an opportunity to put questions to the Finance Minister and receive answers to issues concerning all businesses and residents in the greater Newry area.

 

Some of the feedback received from the Minister included;

Southern Relief Road -  A paper will be brought to the NI Executive.

The Rates System -  We do need a fair transparent rates system but it must work towards the Executive’s priorities.

Brexit - we are in the middle of two negotiation blocks with Brexit and there are big challenges ahead for the Executive.

Mr Murphy said,

“With a new decade and a new approach there are opportunities for us collaborate and look at the issues we face , identify what needs to happen and get a plan presented so that Newry’s voice is heard.

“We all need to be working off the same plan”

The Minister closed by welcoming and encouraging civic involvement,

“The commitment from the Executive is for balanced economic growth and moving into a new decade there will be significant change.” He Said
